I Myself Have Seen It
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (April, 2003)
Author: Susanna Moore
Average review score:

A Stunning Work
This is a stunning history/personal memoir by Hawaii-born Moore, author of four other books. It captures the layered and complicated history of the Hawaiian Islands and at the same time deftly blends in the author's contemporary perspective. A page-turning must-read for anyone interested in Hawaii, or not.

Indentured immigrants : a Jewish family odyssey from Madeira to the Sandwich Islands
Published in Unknown Binding by Flypaper Press (June, 1999)
Author: Philip L. Pasquini
Average review score:

Indentured Immigrants
While Indentured Immigrants accurately traces the journey of a family from Maderia to the Sandwich Islands, it also spells out the history of that time and people and their struggles with life. Painstakenly researched, Philip Pasquini chronicles not only the life of the Pereira family but life aboard the Sterlingshire,a three-masted ship, sailing around Cape Horn. It includes numerous stories of life as an indentured servants in the cane fields of Hawaii, transition to life on the mainland, and the quest of people seeking a better life. Indentured Immigrants is a book that's meant to be read over and over. Graphics, maps, illustrations, and photographs enhance nearly every page. Full of data and poignant stories, this book is long overdue.

Infamy Revisited: Another Look at Pearl Harbor
Published in Paperback by Special Guests Publishing (22 November, 2002)
Authors: David Wade and David R. Wade
Average review score:

Finally, the truth about Pearl Harbor
At long last an intellectual and credible book on the truth about the Pearl Harbor attack.

David Wade brilliantly summarizes the latest research into the catastrophic event that led America into the second world war; a scathing indictment of the duplicity of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The author places the Pearl Harbor attack in the context of the prewar diplomacy of Roosevelt, and shows how the President knew the attack was coming. But Roosevelt deliberately kept our military commanders in Hawaii in the dark, probably a far greater act of treason than committed by Johnny Walker Lindh.

Mr. Wade artfully drew dramatic parallels between the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and the surprise attack on the World Trade Center and Pentegon, connecting December 7 with December 11.

But this book was actually two books in one. I really enjoyed the supplemental information in the back of the book about Presidential Succession.

I was amazed to learn that if there were a nuclear terror act in Washington that claimed the lives of Bush, Cheney and Hastert, then our new president would be none other than Ted Stevens of Alaska!!!

Instant Healing
Published in Hardcover by Renaissance Books (September, 2000)
Author: Serge Kahili, Ph.D. King
Average review score:

A must for personal healing and all professional healers
Both a doctor of psychology and a Hawaiian shaman, Dr. Serge Kahili King brings a truly unique perspective to mind-body medicine, and all its potential. "Instant Healing" is a remarkable compendium of profoundly powerful but simple to use techniques based on his own vast experience. And they work!! I tried one specific technique on a physical problem I have, and in 24 hours, the difference would have been called miraculous by traditional medical standards. Instant indeed, and truly mind-blowing. It's amazing how simple it can be! But the techniques aren't just for phsyical problems. For anyone interested in healing the wounds of the past and/or creating a more promising future, "Instant Healing" is equally engaging and rewarding. For professional healers of any kind (traditional or alternative), it's a whole new tool box to play with. Mostly, I loved Dr. King's accessible, encouraging writing style. It's comforting and inspiring at the same time, as if his intention was to heal the reader through his very words. It's a must have for anyone who wants to tap the deepest healing power of the mind.

Islands in a Far Sea: Nature and Man in Hawaii
Published in Hardcover by Sierra Club Books (December, 1988)
Author: John L. Culliney
Average review score:

Islands in a Far Sea
Our first introduction to the Hawaiian Islands was in the early 1980's; since then we have been conducting research on the islands of Hawai'i and Kauai. Our long association with Hawai'i prompted us to develop a course: The Natural History of Hawai'i; taught by Jamie Deneris, Ph.D., College of Marin, Kentfield, California, and myself, Neil Marshall, Ph.D. College of Notre Dame, Belmont, California. This is a course that includes island biogeography, evolutionary biology, and the geology of oceanic islands. Our text is John Culliney's book, Islands in a Far Sea. This is a wonderfully, scholarly, but eminently readable book. It captures the essence of the geologic and biologic evolution of the Hawaiian Islands, presents the key points of island biogeography, and finally the impact of human activity. A fine book; this needs to be reprinted in a new edition.

Ka'A'Awa: A Novel About Hawaii in the 1850s
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (November, 1980)
Authors: D.A. Bushnell and O. A. Bushnell
Average review score:

1st Rate Historical Fiction
As a native of Hawaii I found this book hard to put down. It's set in Hawaii in the 1850's, during a time when pressure from foreign powers created considerable turmoil within the Hawaiian royal house. What I like best is that the story is told in the person of a Hawaiian priest (and tutor to the Prince Liholiho). He has considerable, intricate, and savy knowledge of what goes on in Hawaii. Yet he too, like the powerful royal house he serves, is subject to political and cutural changes far beyond his control. The descriptions of the influenza and smallpox epidemics, and the manifestations of the rapidly vanishing old culture, are chilling.
